ILM Showcases Generative AI in ’Star Wars: Field Guide’ Short Film
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) has unveiled a groundbreaking ’Star Wars’ short film, ’Field Guide,’ created using generative AI. The two-minute piece, presented during a TED talk by ILM’s Chief Creative Officer Rob Bredow, features a series of alien hybrids generated from Earth animal imagery and AI algorithms.
Bredow framed the project as an experimental test rather than a final product, emphasizing its role in mapping the trajectory of AI’s evolving role in visual effects. The initiative mirrors past industry disruptions, such as the CGI revolution sparked by 1993’s ’Jurassic Park,’ which initially stoked fears of obsolescence among traditional VFX artists.
